New Moon Guide for Beginners

Whether you’re just starting to pay attention to the moon cycles or have been following the moon for a while, this guide will give you fresh ideas for allowing the new moon energy to support you.

How to Start Connecting with the Moon Cycles

The moon is an incredible reminder of the magnificence that is our existence. The moon is up there in the sky, always there — even when we can’t see it!

Paying attention to the moon’s cycles is a powerful practice. It can help you into yourself and the universe, and as a result lead to more alignment and flow in your life.

Use these ideas as a starting place. Then listen to your intuition. Know that you can test and experiment. Try something out and see how it makes you feel. Play with trusting your instincts!

When you’re ready to start connecting with the moon cycles, do this:

  • Look up to the sky. Pay attention to when there is a new moon or a full moon.

  • Notice how you feel and what feels good for you in terms of following the moon

The Science and Woo of the New Moon

The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle. During a new moon, we see the side of the moon that is not being illuminated by the sun, which makes the moon appear to blend in with the dark night sky.

There’s a new moon about once a month, it takes the moon about 29.5 days to orbit Earth. Here’s a fun fact: the word moon shares its origins with the Latin word metri, which means to measure, and mensis, which means month. The moon is called the moon because it is used to measure months.

Since new moon nights are dark, it is a great time for stargazing. On these dark nights, you can see planets, meteor showers, and star clusters.

From energetic and what some call “woo woo” perspectives, the new moon is a time to set intentions and examine works in progress. It is a lower energy phase, a time to go inward, slow down, and take care of yourself. It’s a great time to rest and reflect.

Ideas for Creating Your Own New Moon Rituals

I read about a new moon ritual from a tarot reader named Mariah Oller. Her family literally plant seeds in the ground and while they do it, they think about what they’re hoping to bring into their life.

Create your own new moon rituals, using these ideas to spark inspiration:

The Moon is Always Available

Release any pressure to create a new ritual or rhythm with specific timing. Even if you miss the exact date of a new moon you can still create a supportive practice for yourself. If you ever want to connect to the moon, simply look to the sky and take a deep breath. Tune in to what feels good to you.
