Reverb 10.11 A Few Parting Gifts
Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more. (Anthony Robbins)
Reverb 10.11 - Prompt from December 11, 2010 (Sam Davidson)
11 Things. What are 11 things your life doesn’t need in 2011? How will you go about eliminating them? How will getting rid of these 11 things change your life?
I'm not a minimalist, but I also don't mind clearing space. Thinking about this prompt excites me because the beginning of the year is a great time to eliminate clutter and make room for the future. I don't need the following items in 2011 and I believe that getting rid of them is a gift I can give myself to welcome in the new year.
1. Subscription to Self Magazine. When my current subscription runs out, I'm not going to renew. The articles seem to be the same each month and I'd much rather read my favorite blogs.
2. Books I don't want to read again. My book shelves are lined with a few favorites, a bunch I plan to read, and a handful of books I never want to read again. I intend to clear space and get rid of the books that don't inspire me.
3. Clothing that isn't in style and/or doesn't fit. I usually do a good job of clearing out my closet each season, but I have held on to a few items in hopes that I'll fit into them again some day. It's time to start the year off fresh.
4. Music that's still on CD. I have a new computer and an external hard drive. There's no reason to hold onto old CDs. Time to trash the ones I never want to listen to again and upload the ones I want to keep.
5. Tired beauty products. There are a number of half-empty bottles under my bathroom sink. I've wanted to clear out the junk and make room for products I really enjoy using. Now's the perfect time.
6. Old photos. I have pictures all around my apartment, but many of them make me sad because they're reminders of tarnished family relationships. It's so easy these days to upload new pictures and order fresh prints from Shutterfly. A photo overhaul is in need.
7. My green wallet. I have a nice looking wallet that I'm lucky to own. It's a great color and from a delightful designer. The only thing is, I don't associate the wallet with happiness, power or wealth. It's a long story, but a new wallet is in order.
8. Negative self-talk. I believe thoughts become things. Yet, I don't always practice what I believe. It's time to make a concerted to lean into positivity. To nurture seeds of love and encouragement inside me.
9. Overeating. I want to continue to cultivate a healthy, happy and fulfilling lifestyle. Part of this includes listening to my body's clues and eating until I'm 75% full at mealtime. I have always finished my plate, often going for second servings, so this will be an adjustment. I believe it's one worth making.
10. Worry. I'm quick to remind friends and family that worry is a wasted emotion. It's easy for me to walk someone through a problem and help them understand that worrying doesn't solve anything. My aim is to release worry in 2011 and to make space for serendipity.
11. Excuses. When it comes to working with others and maintaining outward appearances, I get the job done with a smile - no excuses. However, I have mastered the art of dreaming up grand ideas and coming up with excuses about why I can't achieve them. I usually keep these dreams and excuses to myself, sometimes sharing with my mister. I know that this is a bad habit, one that I'm much better off getting rid of in the new year.
