Self-Mothering: Daily Rituals and Practices

Learn about self-mothering practices that will infuse your days with nurturing care. From gentle morning routines to midday check-ins and soothing evening rituals, discover how small actions can cultivate a deeper connection with yourself.

What is Self-Mothering?

Self-mothering is the practice of giving yourself the motherly love that we all need.

It is similar to self-care and reparenting, but different. Let this be an invitation to land on a definition and expression of self-mothering that feels best and right for you.

Morning Self-Mothering Rituals

What can you do in the morning that feels nurturing and loving? Here are a few ideas to explore:

  • Journaling from the voice of motherly love and guidance you need.

  • Meditation for calm, centering, and emotional release.

  • Reading something soothing, inspiring, or entertaining.

  • Pulling a tarot or oracle card, asking for wisdom for the day ahead.

Your morning routine for self-mothering could as simple and short as sitting in the quiet for a few minutes, sipping your coffee and watching the flame of a candle flicker.

Manifesting with Self-Care

Barely have a minute to yourself? Make it count. Use your multi-tasking superpower for serious good. Learn to manifest your dreams while caring for yourself.

Midday Routines for Self-Mothering

Use these ideas to inspire your midday routines for self-mothering:

  • Check in with yourself and your intuition before checking on your to-do list.

  • Getting fresh air for a minute, 30 minutes, or an hour.

  • Moving your body in some way that feels good and brings you joy.

  • Pausing for creative rest or expression, whatever that means to you.

Other midday rituals could be lighting a candle, turning on music, or making yourself a nourishing lunch.

Evening Self-Mothering Practices

The night can be a very magical time, but it can also be a really challenging time. It’s hard to shut things down, to slow down your mind, and not get sucked into the endless scroll and stream in the evening.

Here are a few ways you can bring more self-mothering to your nightly routines:

  • Taking a minute to breathe in stillness before brushing your teeth or washing your face.

  • Reflecting on the day and setting intentions for the day ahead.

  • Being intentional about the technology and entertainment you enjoy.

  • Wearing cozy socks, making a yummy snack, or tucking yourself in early because that’s what you need.
